A mint mark is a small letter stamped on a coin identifying which US Mint facility produced it. The four active minting facilities are West Point (W), San Francisco (S), Philadelphia (P), and Denver (D).
Mint marks matter to collectors because different facilities produce different products — West Point handles most proof and burnished issues while Philadelphia and Denver focus on circulating coinage. Certain mint marks are also associated with lower mintages and therefore greater scarcity.
