BAG OF 500 BUFFALO NICKELS - FULL DATE CIRCULATED As designed by James Earle Fraser, the obverse of the coin shows the profile of a Native American with the word  ”Liberty” on above right.  The reverse is  "Black Diamond," an American bison (buffalo).  "Buffalo nickel"  reflectis the common misnomer for the bison.
