The 2017 5 oz Silver America the Beautiful ATB New Jersey Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty National Monument) Coin designed by Barbara Fox presents an immigrant family approaching Ellis Island expressing a combination of hope and uncertainty, complete with the hospital building in the background.  With a long and rich history, the Ellis Island National Monument of New Jersey became an integrated part of the National Park Service in 1965. In the second half of the 18th century, during the American Revolution, Samuel Ellis was the owner of the island, giving this National Monument its current name. The Federal Government understood its military strategic location and at the beginning of 1800’s, it was transferred to federal ownership. Becoming part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965, the main building on Ellis Island was opened as an Immigration Museum in September 1990, being the biggest restoration project at the time. The island is also known as one of the first and largest public health hospitals in America, opened in 1909, with a capacity of 725 beds and very modern for its time.
