Add the 1 oz coin to your cart today!BarbieBarbie formally premiered March 9, 1959 at the American International Toy Fair in New York City. The doll was the creation of Mattel Inc.'s Ruth Handler, who recognized a gap in the toy market. Handler witnessed her daughter, Barbara, project her childhood aspirations onto paper dolls. Ruth hoped for Barbara to have a realistic, three-dimensional toy to play with like her son Kenneth's action figures; so she created it herself. The idea for Barbie came about from Handler's observation of the German Lilli doll from 1956. The development of the first Barbie began shortly after and was first brought to market in 1958. Barbie became a household name due to a sweeping TV advertisement. Ruth's guiding philosophy was that little girls could play with Barbie and picture themselves in a range of aspirational roles.
